WHAT IS PROOF OF FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY?

The Dallas Police Department’s Auto Pound requires proof of financial responsibility in order to drive a car out of the lot.  This means that you must show proof of insurance and that the insurance policy must be valid and in effect.  The Dallas Auto Pound will not release your car without proof of insurance (unless you are a Lien holder repossessing the vehicle, a Motor Vehicle Insurance Company or taking an Auctioned Vehicle).

You MUST ALWAYS CARRY PROOF OF INSURANCE IN DALLAS.  According to the Dallas Police Department Website, if your car is towed due to you having NO INSURANCE, a citation will be issued and the fees can not be waived.  It is important to keep your car insurance policy updated and to carry your proof of insurance/insurance card at all times.  Please note, many auto insurance companies will offer you a digital insurance card which is accessible by phone.  Many Governmental Agencies do not accept such e-insurance cards as valid proof of insurance.

COST TO RETRIEVE TOWED VEHICLE IN DALLAS

The Towing Fees in Dallas are generally $121 if the towed car is picked up on the same day.  You will also have to pay a $20 impound fee which is for administrative costs related to towing.  You will pay an additional $20 for every additional day the vehicle is at the auto pound.  But wait, that’s not all, if the vehicle is at the Dallas Auto Pound for more than 48 hours, a notification letter is sent.  You will have to pay an additional $50 for the notification fee.

Best Advice: GET YOUR VEHICLE OUT OF THE DALLAS AUTO POUND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  After 48 hours, your towed car fees will rise approximately $70!

Vehicle Booting in Washington DC

District law states that a vehicle is boot-eligible if it has two or more unsatisfied parking and/or photo enforcement tickets that are 60 days old.  A boot is a device attached to the car’s wheel in order to immobilize it. The boot can only be safely removed by DPW. A booted vehicle is subject to towing immediately, if the outstanding tickets and boot fee remain unpaid. Boots are normally removed less than two hours after fines have been paid.

DPW will tow booted vehicles from the street to either 1725 15th Street, NE (open weekdays from 10 am to 7 pm) or the Blue Plains Impoundment and Storage Facility at 5001 Shepherd Parkway, SW (open weekdays between 8 am and 4:30 pm). Customers may call (202) 541-6083 to learn the impoundment lot where their vehicle was towed.

To release the booted or towed vehicle, you must pay the boot or tow fee and all outstanding parking tickets on the vehicle tag.

Call 311 or (202) 737-4404 to determine which impoundment lot your vehicle is located.
  • Payments may be made with cash, money order, or credit card. The DC Government accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards. DC Government does not accept American Express credit cards.
